House Democrats Set To Move Bill After Accord With Blue Dogs, Liberals Objecting
House Democrats on Wednesday made a deal with fiscally conservative Blue Dog Democrats on a health reform bill that "would reduce the overall cost of the package and ensure more funding for rural hospitals, concessions that could allow the Energy and Commerce Committee to finish its consideration of the legislation," The Washington Post reports. The deal will be considered on the House floor no earlier than September, according to several lawmakers. House lawmakers plan to conclude their markup of the legislation in the Energy Committee Thursday.

Politico Examines Retraction, Resubmission Of Proposed HIV Travel Ban Rule
Politico"s blog "Under the Radar" explores HHS" recent decision to revise documents submitted to the Federal Register regarding a change in HIV-related immigration policy. The blog looks at differences between the original document sent to the Federal Register on Monday compared to the version slated to be resubmitted by HHS Thursday, noting that while "the proposed rule was pulled from publication in Tuesday"s edition at the request of HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius" late Monday because it was ""incomplete," it was actually 12 pages longer than the replacement," with "different data than the original" that "could ease sticker shock." Politico compares the two proposals - one which estimates the number of immigrants living in the U.S. with HIV after five years; the other which estimates the number after 20 years. The blog notes, CDC, the agency responsible for the documents, did not comment on the changes when asked. The blog has links to both versions of the Federal Register documents (McGarr, 7/1).

First High-Definition Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) Technology Enhances Diagnostic Procedures

Physicians can now provide potentially safer and more accurate diagnostic procedures with the first and only high-definition endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) needle technology. Cook Medical, the only full-line supplier of endoscopic medical devices, has designed a complete line of high-definition EUS biopsy needles that are up to three-times brighter than others on the market. With the addition of the 19 and 25 gage EchoTip® Ultra with High Definition Fine Needle Aspiration (HDFNA™) needles, the EchoTip Ultra HDFNA represents the next level of precision in EUS, an essential diagnostic tool that yields more accurate images of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract than traditional ultrasound and provides minimally invasive access to areas that are traditionally difficult to reach. Under ultrasound guidance, a special needle inserted in the endoscope collects cells from targeted sites.
