NHS Confederation Responds To Public Accounts Committee Report On NHS Funding

Nigel Edwards, the director of policy at the NHS Confederation, said, "The surpluses generated by the NHS over the 2007-2008 financial year are a testament to sound financial planning and an awareness on the part of everyone in the service of the need to spend public money carefully. "It means that as the NHS approaches the next few years, when settlements will be tighter and there is flexibility and financial room to move already built into the balance sheet. "The challenges of the recession for the NHS will be ensuring that patients carry on receiving the best possible care at a time when joblessness and stress related illnesses can cause greater numbers of hospital admissions, while also finding efficiency savings and providing the best possible value for money for the taxpayer. Notes The NHS Confederation annual conference and exhibition 2009 is taking place from 10 - 12 June at ACC Liverpool. Programme details are available here. The NHS Confederation represents more than 95% of the organisations that make up the NHS. Its members include the majority of NHS acute trusts, ambulance trusts, foundation trusts, mental health trusts, primary care trusts, independent providers of NHS services, special health authorities and strategic health authorities in England; trusts and local health boards in Wales; and health and social service trusts and boards in Northern Ireland.
