The Characteristics Of Clarithromycin-Resistant Helicobacter pylori
Clarithromycin is currently one of the antibiotics used for eradication of Helicobacter pylori. However, reports of H. pylori resistance to this antibiotic are increasing worldwide. Clarithromycin resistance has been attributed to the presence of mutations in the 23S rRNA gene, a component of the ribosome that is the protein manufacturing machinery of all living cells. There is little information on the prevalence and characteristics of clarithromycin resistance in H. pylori strains isolated from Malaysian patients.

Philips Introduces Three New Products To Improve Performance And Patient Comfort For Hospital And Home Ventilation

Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHI) introduced three new respiratory support devices: the Respironics V60 and V200, and Trilogy100 ventilators. These ventilation solutions are intended to support breathing in the intensive care, sub-acute, and home care settings. As a family of products, the three devices are well-suited to address the ventilation care challenges that clinicians face on a daily basis, such as treating respiratory failure from exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) while avoiding ventilator-associated pneumonia. Respironics V60 Ventilator Following its acquisition of Respironics, Philips extends its recognized leadership in noninvasive ventilation (NIV) with the Respironics V60 Ventilator. It provides traditional invasive respiratory support with a tube inserted into the patient"s windpipe or noninvasive support via a patient face mask. "Noninvasive ventilation has been proven to significantly reduce the incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), and it has also been shown to shorten the time patients spend in the hospital," says Randy Whitfield, general manager of Hospital Respiratory Care, for Philips Healthcare. Respironics V200 Critical Care Ventilator The Respironics V200 Critical Care Ventilator, scheduled for release in June 2009, integrates auto-adaptive technology and provides ventilation for neonatal, pediatric and adult patients. The innovative speaking mode, found on only the Respironics V200 and Esprit ventilators, provides the tracheostomized patient the ability to speak without the need for costly external valves. Ryan Zumalt, director of Respiratory Care at Northern California Rehab Hospital, says, "The speaking mode really boosts the confidence of the patient, making them more apt to progress through the day and work with physical therapy, nursing, and respiratory therapy." Trilogy100 Ventilator Trilogy100 is a highly-versatile, lightweight (11 lbs.) life-support ventilator that meets the needs of a wide range of patients in the home and alternative care settings. Trilogy100 has many advanced features, such as auto-adaptive technology, volume- or pressure- control ventilation and the ability to ventilate with either a mask or a tracheal tube. "Trilogy100 has been designed to help caregivers and clinicians more easily administer care in the home and allow patients to be as active as possible while using the ventilator," says John Frank, vice president and general manager, Home Respiratory Care, for Philips Healthcare. "Its ease of use, versatility, and portability make Trilogy100 a significant advancement in home respiratory support." Royal Philips Electronics
