CEL-SCI Files Patent Application To Support Company's Treatment For More Virulent Strain Of H1N1 Swine And Other Influenza Viruses
CEL-SCI CORPORATION (NYSE AMEX: CVM) announced that it has filed a provisional U.S. patent application covering its L.E.A.P.S.(TM) immune therapy drugs (vaccines) for the prevention/treatment of H1N1, swine, bird flu, Influenza A and/or evolving mutants or variants of these viruses. Some experts believe that by the next flu season the swine flu virus will have evolved and/or combined with other viruses to create a much more lethal new virus. That is what happened in the case of the Spanish flu pandemic. CEL-SCI"s efforts to fight this virus are focused on using conserved epitopes from essential proteins to be found in the A influenza virus for H1N1, H1N5, swine, bird flu and Spanish influenza to create an effective vaccine/treatment that could potentially fight such a mutant virus.

House Democrats To Unveil Health Care Bill Details
"After a series of false starts, House Democrats are finally expected to unveil the details of a sweeping reform measure on Tuesday that would drastically revamp the country"s health care system," Politico reports. "Party leaders had initially planned to introduce legislation last week and start considering it in committees this week. But that timeline was scuttled when a parade of moderates threw up their arms last week at a draft of the bill offered weeks earlier by the three chairmen writing it." While the Democrats "know that the clock is ticking-that the slower the process goes, the more time opponents will have to plant doubts in the minds of voters," Republicans are "feeling giddy-free to stand back and watch as Democrats fight amongst themselves."

National Marrow Donor Program Increasing Efforts To Attract Minority Donors
The National Marrow Donor Program, a not-for-profit group that manages a national registry for potential bone marrow donors, is using social networking sites to attract donors from minority communities, the Wall Street Journal reports. The process of finding a genetic match for a bone marrow transplant is often more difficult for minorities or people who identify themselves as multiracial because patients and donors must be genetically compatible. According to the Journal, a white patient has an 88% chance of finding a match, while the odds of most minorities finding a match can be as low as 60%. The odds of some minorities actually receiving a transplant can be as low as 20% because of other factors such as access to care in their communities, the Journal reports. About seven million U.S. residents already have signed up for the national registry -- recently renamed Be the Match -- and the program also has increased outreach to younger potential donors through social networking Web sites, such as Facebook and MySpace (Landro, Wall Street Journal, 5/27).

Results and additional analyses from the Phase II portion of a Phase II/III clinical trial of Corthera"s investigational drug relaxin for the treatment of acute heart failure will be presented at the Heart Failure Congress, the annual meeting of the Heart Failure Association of the European Society of Cardiology in Nice, France. Marco Metra, M.D., professor of cardiology at the University of Brescia, Italy, and co-principal investigator of the Pre-RELAX-AHF study, will present the main results from the multicenter, international Pre-RELAX-AHF study at 8:30 a.m. CET on Sunday, May 31, at the Judges" Choice oral abstracts session. Dr. Metra will also present additional analyses of the Pre-RELAX-AHF study during a late-breaking clinical trials session at 11:15 a.m. CET on Monday, June 1. Five posters from the Pre-RELAX-AHF study will also be presented from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. CET on Monday, June 1. About Relaxin Relaxin is a naturally occurring peptide hormone that acts as a systemic and renal vasodilator. Elevated levels of relaxin modulate increases in renal and cardiac function that meet the increased hemodynamic demands of pregnancy. Consistent with this natural role of the hormone, pharmaceutically manufactured relaxin has been shown to have these effects in multiple human studies of men and non-pregnant women, including patients with heart failure. About Corthera Corthera Inc. is a private biopharmaceutical company committed to acquiring, developing and commercializing therapies for illnesses in the acute care setting. Corthera"s lead product candidate, relaxin, is currently being evaluated in clinical trials for acute heart failure. The company has worldwide rights to develop and commercialize relaxin.
