Scientists Capture The First Image Of Memories Being Made
The ability to learn and to establish new memories is essential to our daily existence and identity; enabling us to navigate through the world. A new study by researchers at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital (The Neuro), McGill University and University of California, Los Angeles has captured an image for the first time of a mechanism, specifically protein translation, which underlies long-term memory formation. The finding provides the first visual evidence that when a new memory is formed new proteins are made locally at the synapse - the connection between nerve cells - increasing the strength of the synaptic connection and reinforcing the memory. The study published in Science, is important for understanding how memory traces are created and the ability to monitor it in real time will allow a detailed understanding of how memories are formed.

MMWR Report On Gonorrhea And Chlamydia Incidence Among MSM Spurs AHF To Call For FDA Approval Of Newer Testing Technologies
On the heels of the publication today of a landmark, five city US study of gonorrhea and Chlamydia infections and related testing protocols among populations of at-risk men-who-have-sex-with-men (MSM), the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF)-a clinical participant in the research trial component in Los Angeles- called on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to fast track approval of newer and alternative testing technologies highlighted in the study for use in the diagnosis of gonorrhea and Chlamydia infections among high-risk populations. The study, "Clinic-based Testing for Rectal and Pharyngeal Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis Infections by Community-based Organizations-Five Cities, United States, 2007" published in the respected Centers for Disease Control"s (CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR, July 9, 2009), found that one testing protocol, nucleic acid amplification (NAA), is, "ò€¦generally more sensitive and favored by most experts," particularly for extragenital testing (for rectal and pharyngeal specimens); however, "NAA tests have not been cleared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the diagnosisò€¦and may not be marketed for that purpose."

Planned Parenthood Of Alaska, Teacher File Suit To Block Parental Notification Initiative
Planned Parenthood of Alaska and an Anchorage high school teacher filed a lawsuit in Anchorage Superior Court on Friday to block a voter initiative that would make it illegal for minors younger than age 18 to obtain abortion services without parental notification, the Anchorage Daily News reports. Supporters of the initiative, which was certified on July 2, must gather nearly 33,000 signatures in order for it to be put on the ballot in August 2010.The lawsuit claims that the initiative should not have been certified because of what the newspaper termed "legal technicalities" and because the ballot description of its impact is misleading. According to legal documents filed by Planned Parenthood and teacher Susan Wingrove, the language of the initiative indicates that minor changes would be made to an existing law "rather than making clear that the initiative is abolishing rights currently afforded to the citizens of Alaska who are minors." They also claim that the initiative does not make it clear that violations of the law would be a felony and that it would be the responsibility of the physician to inform parents.Previous attempts to enact parental notification and consent laws have failed in Alaska. The Alaska Parental Consent Act, which was approved in 1997, said that parental notification or approval from a judge was necessary before a minor could obtain an abortion. Legal challenges prevented the act from going into effect, and the Alaska Supreme Court in 2007 ruled that the law was unconstitutional. In addition, a bill that would have required girls younger than age 17 to notify a parent failed to make it through the state Legislature this year.Former Lt. Gov. Loren Leman (R), a supporter of the new initiative, called Planned Parenthood of Alaska and the teacher "desperate," adding that they "would deny the people of Alaska the opportunity to participate in the initiative process" (Holland, Anchorage Daily News, 7/31).

Rotherham Nurse Raises Alarm Over Infant Medicine Feeder

A concerned Rotherham nurse has forced manufacturers of an infant medicine feeder to withdraw its product following a safety scare. Nurse Karen Ray, a clinical procurement specialist at Rotherham Hospital, took her concerns to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) after a six-month-old baby was admitted to Rotherham Hospital following a liquid paracetamol overdose. Karen Ray told the MHRA how she feared the First Steps feeder, manufactured by RSW International Ltd, was being distributed nationwide and sold for ÷£1 in discount retail outlets, and on eBay. RSW International have now recalled all remaining stock. Karen explained: "I was worried when I saw the medicine feeder about how confusing the measurements were. The measurements were in mls and teaspoons and it was really unclear which was which. "I immediately took my concerns to the MHRA and they contacted the manufacturers. Thankfully it has now been removed from sale." MHRA Director of Device Technology and Safety, Clive Bray, said he "strongly advised" people to stop using these medicine feeders which are marketed for the administration of liquid medicines to babies and young children. "There is no evidence that the safety, quality or performance of this product has been assessed to the current standard," he said. "The product could pose a potential risk to babies or young children as the measuring scale is confusing and could be inaccurate. "This may have caused the reported overdose and we are strongly advising parents to stop using, and dispose of this product." The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust
