A Painless Way To Hold Down Health Costs?
NPR reports on a way to reduce national health care costs: "Getting doctors and hospitals in the parts of the country that spend the most on medical care now to bring that spending more in line with that of lower-spending regions." Researchers at The Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care "have found two key points. First, it"s clear that patients who live in the lower spending areas do just as well as those where spending is higher. But just as important, more is not always better: Sometimes more spending can lead to worse outcomes." In lower-spending areas, "more care tends to be provided by primary care physicians, and patients in those areas are much less likely to spend time in the hospital for care that could be provided elsewhere." But "Patients in those higher spending communities are twice as likely to have 10 or more different physicians involved in their care. ò€¦ And it"s really hard for physicians to maintain effective communication when there are so many more of them involved in a patient"s care," says Elliott Fisher, principal investigator for the Dartmouth Atlas.

Supreme Court Nominee Sotomayor Resumes Meetings With Senators; Confirmation Vote Still Unclear
Judge Sonia Sotomayor, President Obama"s nominee for the Supreme Court, on Thursday will hold a third round of private meetings with senators who will be voting on her confirmation, the AP/Chicago Tribune reports. The AP/Tribune reports that by Friday, Sotomayor will have met with more than one-quarter of the Senate and a majority of members on the Senate Judiciary Committee, which will lead an as-yet-unscheduled set of hearings for her confirmation. The Judiciary Committee is expected to receive and examine a large collection of documents for the hearings -- including Sotomayor"s writings, speeches and unpublished rulings -- as part of a questionnaire response on personal and financial data, possible conflicts of interest and the procedure that led to her nomination. According to the AP/Tribune, the White House in recent days has been rallying support for Sotomayor, with first lady Michelle Obama on Wednesday talking about the nominee at a high school graduation (Hirschfeld Davis, AP/Chicago Tribune, 6/4).Meanwhile, Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and ranking member Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) on Wednesday failed to reach an agreement on a timeline for Sotomayor"s confirmation hearings and vote, CongressDaily reports. According to CongressDaily, Democrats and Republicans generally are "at odds" over the issue, particularly over when the confirmation hearings should start (Friedman, CongressDaily, 6/3). Leahy said that he would like hearings to begin next month, with the goal of scheduling a confirmation vote before the month-long congressional recess that begins in early August. Sessions has called for the process to be spread out over the summer to allow committee members to analyze the large volume of Sotomayor"s records, with hearings beginning in September (AP/Chicago Tribune, 6/4).Leahy -- who will have the final say on the start of the hearings -- on Tuesday said that "it would be irresponsible to leave [Sotomayor] hanging out there" until September (CongressDaily, 6/3).

Update On Lu AA21004 Clinical Development Programme In Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)

H. Lundbeck A/S (Lundbeck) and Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited (Takeda) jointly announced headline results from the first three clinical trials in the phase III development programme with Lu AA21004 in major depressive disorder (MDD). Previously reported clinical phase II data showed equal efficacy with the 5 and 10 mg doses. In the recently completed phase III clinical trials, Lu AA21004 was tested in doses of 2.5, 5 and 10 mg. Results from two studies, which included the lower dosages, 2.5 and 5 mg, did not reach significance across studies when compared with placebo. A third trial demonstrated mixed results, with the 2.5 mg dose not reaching statistical significance compared to placebo, and the 5 and 10 mg doses showing separation from placebo, although not in all analyses. These results also suggest that a higher dose may be more efficacious. In all of these trials, Lu AA21004 was well tolerated and confirmed the previously observed favourable safety profile. As a result, the most appropriate dose of Lu AA21004 needs to be established. It is anticipated that this work will postpone submission of the new drug application (NDA) in the US with approximately 18-24 months. Lundbeck and Takeda will continue to work with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other regulatory agencies on the clinical development program and submission plans. Lu AA21004 is also in phase III development for generalised anxiety disorder (GAD). About depression Depression is a very common, debilitating illness affecting around 121 million people worldwide. Depression is not at all recognised by society as the serious disorder it actually is. The symptoms of depression can be chronic or recurrent, and impact patients both mentally and physically. Depression has a significant impact on patient quality of life and imposes a considerable burden on society, yet it is still under-recognised and undertreated with less than 25 percent of those affected having access to effective treatment. Symptoms include feelings of sadness, anxiety, loss of interest in activities, decreased energy, impaired sleep, impaired concentration, hopelessness, guilt, persistent physical symptoms such as pain and digestive disorders, and in more severe cases, suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts.
